MuslinZ Prefolds Overview


MuslinZ soft cotton prefolds are an ideal cheap basic nappy. MuslinZ cotton prefolds can be used pad folded into a wrap or a great option used as inserts stuffed into pocket cloth nappies. Later on they can be used as boosters or in trainer pants for extra protection as well. 

My preference is that they are used in pocket nappies as they are quicker and easier to use.

Unlike other brands of cotton prefolds MuslinZ prefolds are made of layers of thin absorbent muslin fabric making them softer and more light weight.

The Prefold Nappy System

Prefolds are a budget cloth nappy system similar to a Terry Square. Prefold nappies can be simply folded into thirds in a wrap or pinned with a nappy nippa for greater containment. 

The main downside to just pad folding prefold cloth nappies is that the nappy is only held in place by the wrap, its containment is only as good as that wrap.

The general idea is that you reuse the wrap upto 4 times rather than washing it at every change however for a newborn breastfed baby, it is highly likely poo will come off the prefold and soil the wrap as well. Now, obviously, this is a phase that passes and the performance of the cloth nappies becomes more reliable over time, but when you’re knee-deep in poo, you might wonder if it was such a great choice after all. I also found that trying to keep the nappy, wrap and liner in place while trying to change a wriggly baby quite tricky.

I still think prefolds are marvellous cheap yet absorbent cloth nappies but I really recommend you use them as inserts inside a pocket nappy. With a pocket nappy you know you will be changing the outer at every change so your expectation is the same as the performance of the nappy system.

MuslinZ Care Guide

  • Prewash nappy twice before first use at 40deg and a low spin speed
  • Wash dark colours separately
  • Wash with non-bio powder
  • No harsh stain removers or bleach.
  • No fabric softeners. They will reduce absorbency.
  • Wash tempreature according to garment label
  • Ideally line dry or tumble dry on cool.
  • If using a nappy cream always use a nappy liner - ideally a disposable paper liner.

  • Envelope Covers covers Snap issues for 12 months
  • Elastic defects for 60 days 
  • Workmanship /sewing defects for 30 days
  • Prefolds and terry inserts sewing defects only for 30 days.

    WARRANTIES ARE NON- TRANSFERABLE. The name on the invoice/sales receipt must match the name of the individual making the claim. MuslinZ warranty does not cover any used items purchased second-hand.

Delamination: MuslinZ replace all diapers with delaminated PUL that are claimed with a year of purchase, with proof of purchase. 

Cracked PUL: As per MuslinZ conversations with the PUL supplier, cracked PUL occurs when the laminate is severely dried out. This can happen because of water quality, types of detergent, and many other factors out of our control. As such, the manufacturer does not cover cracked PUL under warranty.

Stretched Braided Elastics: MuslinZ cover issues with braided elastics for 60 days, with proof of purchase. Elastics stretch over time and this is inevitable. Factors such as hard water, constant stripping, use of fabric softeners, bleach, vinegar or scented detergents, extreme high temperatures, smaller than recommended stashes, as examples, can affect the life of an elastic and are out of our control. If there is an issue with elastics within 60 days of purchase MuslinZ will require photos, proof of purchase and details of the issue at hand.

Inserts: MuslinZ cover all manufacturing defects on both viscose from bamboo and microterry inserts for 30 days with proof of purchase. This includes pre-existing rips to the fabric or sewing-related issues.

Normal Wear and Tear/Non-manufacturing related damages: All products have a limited lifespan despite care taken to preserve them. These products are used to contain such acidic substances as urine and feces, and are washed regularly. As such, they will all eventually show wear and tear. There is no set amount of time that a nappy product can be expected to last. MuslinZ do not warranty against degredation from prolonged storage or wear from use including but not limited to holes, runs under snaps, snags on sidewalks or from pools, wood, cement, or washer/dryer problems. If you notice any such thing PRIOR to first wash, please do not wash. Contact The Nappy Lady to arrange an exchange.

I ordered 12 of these and have washed and started using them, they're a great size for a newborn (mine is about 3.5 kg).

We’ve been using these as newborn flat nappies in conjunction with a wrap before we move onto terry towels. They are big and thick enough to absorb newborn wee but thin enough that they aren’t too bulky on a newborn. The containment is absolutely fine using a Jo fold and a good wrap.

I ordered these hoping they’d be bigger than the prefolds I already have, they wasn’t but I didn’t compare dimensions. Lovely muslinz and I’m happy using them as mop up cloths or pad folded in pockets. I’d definitely get the size three though if I was to order again so I could hopefully get better width in case I was to fold them onto baby.
