Bumgenius Freetime Overview

Bumgenius Freetime is a one size, all in one cloth nappy. No more stuffing or loosing parts in the wash.

Bumgenius Freetime gives YOU more FREETIME less chores.

The Freetime all in one is so simple and very close to the way a disposable nappy works (except you don't throw it away!)  Making the Freetime suitable for any type of childcare.

Features

Freetime is really simple, easy to use all in one. Once again, Bumgenius have proved themselves to be GENIUS when it comes to cloth nappies!

  • One step cloth nappy - no stuffing!
  • Semi-attached inserts dry faster
  • Trim, snug and comfortable stretchy tabs provide a custom fit
  • Gentle leg elastic contains the mess!
  • Soft, sueded inner fabric gently wicks moisture away from your baby's skin.
  • soft waterproof outer fabric

Sizing

Bumgenius Freetime fits most babies 8-35lbs.

We find the Bumgenius Freetime comes up a little shorter than the other nappies in the Bumgenius range so it's a better choice for short to average height/length babies.

If you are a tall family or baby seems to be taller than average choose the Bumgenius V5 Original pocket nappy or Bumgenius Elemental instead.

How do I use it?

The waist fastens with poppers in my favourite vertical popper position. The vertical position holds the tabs firmly in place and minimises wing droop. The stretchy tabs also offer a highly versatile fit as the tabs stretch so you can angle the waist poppers for the perfect fit for your baby.

The nappy length is altered by the 3 x 3 poppers on the front to offer you small, medium and long length, the nappies grows with your baby.
.
The microfibre pads inside the nappy have 2 folding lines on each pad. You can ignore these and just lay the inserts flat or you can fold along these lines to move the absorbency to where your baby needs it most. This tends to be folded towards the front for boys and the back for girls. See this in action in our demo video.

Read our article for more information and photos on how to adjust one size nappies.

Nappy Fabric

100% Polyester

Multiple layers of stay dry lined microfibre make this an incredibly quick drying nappy, it's perfect if you have limited drying facilities as it stays soft even in hard water areas and dries on an airer within hours.

Day or Night?

This Bumgenius Freeimte nappy is only for daytime use.

For night time you can try the Bumgenius Elemental with additional hemp boosters, or our preference is for a two part nappy such as a Bamboozle Stretchy  additional booster, and Motherease wrap.

Care

Wash dark colours separately for at least 2 washes until you are sure no colour is coming out of them.

We really like All in one nappies in general and do like the bumgenius range. The freetime product line is really good as they dry quickly and they tick all the boxes in terms of a good cloth nappy - great fit, comfortable, compact and quick drying. Our only issue has been the flaps open up which turns it into a really long nappy (this is essential for quick drying) but this becomes an issue when you are trying to clean the poop off in the loo as the nappy would go into the toilet if you are not careful. This makes the whole spraying the poop off process slightly difficult, but else it is a great nappy.

I had heard good things about this nappy but personally I found it too chunky and found the lining (microfiber) not soft enough. An expensive nappy. I much prefer the 'Little Lambs' , which are cheaper and softer. I couldn't fault the service I received from The Nappy Lady.

I'm fairly impressed with these all in ones, I like the design and they seem to fit nice and snug on my baby-no leaks yet and seem to take quite a lot of wee.
I particularly like the two sown in liner design and they dry really quickly.
The only negative in my eyes is they seem quite bulky compared to the cotton elementals, only an issue with a smaller baby I would imagine. They are quite a tight fit too so if you have a chunky monkey might not last the distance but I have a tiny babe so perfect for us.

I have found these nappies to be really absorbent, and they dry very quickly. Overall I really like them, but have given only 4 stars because I find them a little 'neat' on my 2 month old so I am not sure they will last him until he is potty trained. He is quite chunky though, I think they would suit a slimmer baby better.

Brilliant nappies for our small and slim baby
Rating:
03 September 2018  |

After trying some bamboo miosolo nappies which didn't fit our little one at all we were recommended these by the nappy lady. Our ten month old is small (15lbs) and very slim and these nappies fit like a dream without a single leak in the two weeks we have been using them. They usually dry hanging inside within 24 hours, sometimes they take a little longer but our house is quite cold and dark, they dry much faster outside when it's sunny. They are so easy to use, I don't find them bulky at all and they are quick to change.

Bulky and leaks
Rating:
15 May 2018  |

We tried a bumgenius all-in-one nappy because of the range of patterns but we won't be buying another one. The cloth nappy is very bulky when you fasten the outer poppers for a smaller baby and we then ended up with leaks. It also takes a VERY long time to dry....longer than the bamboo nappies that we use at night. Not our best buy

Beware - not good on sensitive skin!
Rating:
27 September 2017  |

Having bought a large quantity for nights after liking the bumgenius Freetime and seeing the good reviews and recommendation in the descriptions from the nappy lady, I was disappointed to discover that our little one developed a rash everytime he wore one (even for a couple of hours) as the organic inner has now keep dry properties. This doesn't seem to be a problem for most, but as seen in a couple of other reviews here, it is for those with sensitive skin. It took a week for the rash to subside and we had to revert to disposables in the meantime. It would be good if the description had made this clear to avoid others making the same mistake and buying many nappies that aren't suitable for their job to use on their own without a liner. Absorbency was good, it just the dampness isn't kept away from the skin of the baby.

Very easy to use
Rating:
27 May 2017  |

This nappy is very easy to use and very quick to dry. It fits well on our chubby baby. I wanted a nappy which was as easy as possible to use, to avoid objections from my partner, and this fits the bill. We have the popper version so the used nappy can go straight in the bucket (even leaving the liner in if it's only wet). It only takes a moment to hang them up to dry after washing as they are one piece which simply unfolds. And refolding the clean, dry nappy for reuse also only takes a second.
The absorbency is good and the nappy lasts at least 4 hours in the day which is the maximum we go between feeds. At night it has lasted much longer. We have also been having far fewer leaks than with disposables. Even if there is a leak, it's easier to deal with as the dirty clothes can go into the bucket and create no extra work. We have a 2-month-old breast-fed baby, so plenty of runny poos to be contained!
As suggested on the website we got the Bumgenius Elemental for night time.

Nice nappy, only downside is it's a bit bulky on a small baby - but then I have chosen to use the slimmest nappies I can find so in the grand scheme of things this only shows up by comparison.

Really love the various patterns with the Bumgenius Freetimes, especially the new Austen. Nappies look great under outfits and are slimmer than other nappies so easier to fit under tighter fitting clothes.
Vest extenders still useful.
Fits well although started to gape at front on my 15week old.
Contains poosplosions but needs changing regularly (2-3hours) otherwise get little wee leaks. Love these as our daytime nappy. Grandma and daddy friendly too 😊

07 September 2016  |

This is a very trim fit nappy. Love the butterfly fastening which is lovely and stretchy. I bought the Alicia patter which is absolutely gorgeous on. I do find that the top of the front of the nappy sits a little bit awkwardly because of the way that the pads are stitched in, which means there's some gape when the nappy is on irrespective of which poppers are used. Dries very quickly (but not as quickly as the Motherease Wizard Duo). Most novice friendly nappy I've tried - very simple to work out and therefore very daycare friendly. Great that you don't have to stuff or popper in the pads. The big downside to all similar nappies though is the single gusset which is less protective against explosions than a fitted nappy plus wrap combo. Overall, for reliability, I therefore prefer a fitted nappy as I've had a couple of messy poo leaks with these.

Great information on this site - made cloth nappies & the different options accessible for me as a first time mum. Fast delivery & quick replacement when I had a quality control issue. Freetime is quick & easy to use, as the name suggests - clever design, no other parts to find, stuff in, or popper together. We will get a lot of wear from this - it's quick to dry off the rack as it's constructed of two layers of microfibre, not one fat pad. Polyester is not the most environmental choice as it takes a very long time to biodegrade, but it's still a better option than disposibles. I like poppers over Velcro as the waist area is soft & flexible and bends where baby bends. Our 5 month old can't sit up yet so still very floppy in the middle and our Velcro nappies seem a bit restrictive around his fat tummy, like he's wearing a big wide belt. Bumgenius have a nice trim fit under baby's clothes compared to our BambinoMio.

Fantastic service as ever from the nappy lady. These are surprisingly good nappies - I'd gone off microfibre in general as my boy out wees it, but I've never had any problems with the freetime. Fantastic that I can arrange absorbancy and very comfy looking. I wish I'd bought more than just the one, but baby is growing so fast and big it's no longer a good investment for us

We have been using these nappies for over a year, having transitioned from Terry nappies. We love them! Great absorbency, great containment and they look slim. HOWEVER: we are now having to replace all the ones we bought that had Velcro fasteners. I know they sell kits to replace the Velcro but we have no sewing machine, and no access to one. It's such a shame as they were supposed to be an investment, but has ended up costing us a lot of money.

We were recommended these by the nappy lady. My husband wasn't sure about cloth nappies and having the all in one system, the easy poppers and great fit has really helped him get used to this. The quality is great, my wee one likes the nappies and they contain all bar the worst explosions. They wash well and dry quickly. Really impressed.

Good, easy to use, but urine wicks through around legs quickly
Rating:
23 January 2016  |

We got these nappies based on the recommendation by the Nappy Lady. My husband was not so keen on washable nappies and after trying some different second-hand ones bought on amazon, the compromise was that we'd get something as simple as a disposable. Plus, it must dry quickly as we have no drier or airing cupboard.

We've been using 15 of them for about 3-4 months now. And this nappy definitely fulfills the criteria above. It's very easy to put on (poppers) and there is no searching for inserts or a suitable wrap. It also dries very quickly. Even if not completely dry, it can be put on, because the microfiber touching the skin will be dry, even when the underlying more absorbent part is still slightly moist.

The poppers allow a good fit around the waist and legs. In contrast to disposables, we've never had a poop leak, as they close well around the back.

IMO this nappy has one big downside: At the seam around the legs, the inner lining goes further out than the cover material. I.e. when put on, the inner lining easily comes in touch with tight clothes like leggings or tights. And after about 3-4 hours, the urine will wick through even though the nappy does not seem particularly wet. This means this nappy needs to be changed much more regularly than I change disposables when we go abroad. And we've had several urine leaks so far. I feel this problem could be solved easily if the seam was sewn so that the cover extends slightly further than the inner lining.

Another slightly disappointing things are the colors. The colors we received were not as advertised.
Especially for Jolly: This looked to us like a pistachio, but then was a bright-neon-yellow nappy.
I returned the jolly nappy as it was not what I had ordered. On my feedback, I was told that colors look different on different screens. I asked if, since this is known to be the case, a short written description of colors could be given. However, I see this has not been made yet. I think this would avoid some disappointment. I plan on using this nappy on at least two children. I'd like to be happy with the colors.

So, overall we've been very happy with this nappy and enjoy putting on colorful nappies each time.
But since it is quite expensive and the urine wicking is annoying, I would think about using a quick drying shaped nappy like the Teddy Nappies and a good wrap like the motherease ones instead.
But then, these might have other downsides... And the BG Freetime it is overall a good nappy!

Bumgenius Freetime One size cloth nappy with poppas
Rating:
02 January 2016  |

I got these for my daughter to use. She now has two little ones in cloth nappies. She loves them and can use the same ones for the 22 month old as the 4 month old. She used disposables briefly when the new baby was born and was appalled at the amount of waste they created. These cloth nappies are brilliant, she likes the poppa version best because the Velcro began to lose it's 'stick' after 18months. She found the advice from Nappy Lady very useful when she first decided to use cloth nappies.

No matter what i do with this nappy my son leaks through.
I change him roughly every 2-3 hours but in his bum genius i usually have to change him pretty much half hour later.

I've tried washing it a few extra times to maybe help with the absorbancy but had no luck.

Maybe its because my son is quite chunky and a heavy wetter... but yeah, no matter what this one creates wet patches after only half hour-hour of wear time. So glad i only bought one, and i wont be buying another. Was NOT worth the £21 and a big regret. I could have bought a couple more Bamboozles instead

We've only used these for a week and so far no leaks at all compared to the other brand we've got. On our second day, I thought my husband used the bamboozle so I didn't bother to change my daughter until the morning. To my surprise, it was the freetime. 10 hours my daughter was in it and there wasn't any sign of leaks at all! Very slim fit. My daughter is 7 weeks old and she is 14 lbs already!

The delivery and customer service is excellent as well. Very fast delivery and quick response from Wendy.

Fast-drying and easy to use
Rating:
02 September 2015  |

We bought these on recommendation from The Nappy Lady, for daytime use. They are very, very fast-drying - dry in a couple of hours on the line, and also quick-drying on an airer inside the house. We wash them on a 60 degree cycle without extra rinse, using Ecover powder, and they come up beautifully clean. The flushable liners are a useful addition to minimise rinsing of dirty nappies. We bought the nappies with poppers, they're simple to use, secure and make washing easy (no need to secure tabs first). We have yet to have a leak with these and love the simplicity of the all-in-one design. Just a couple of small downsides: 1. They are pretty bulky, so when our daughter's been on the cusp of moving up a clothes size she's had to go up a bit early so that the clothes fit round the nappy, and 2. They seemed a bit big to use on her when she was newborn, though they are advertised as being usable from 8lb upwards. This may be a matter of opinion. All in all, great and glad we chose them!
