Prewashing Cloth Nappies27 CommentsThursday, 31 January 2019 It is VERY important that you prewash your nappies before you use them. If you don't prewash them, they will not be absorbent enough and they will leak. We recommend that you prewash them twice before use. This can be done at 30/40 degrees centigrade and you only need minimal detergent. There is no need to dry the nappies in between the two pre-washes. The nappies will reach their full absorbency after approximately 5 washes but 2 prewashes is enough to get started. If you have coloured nappies and/or wraps you should wash dark/strong colours separately to whites/lights incase of colour running as not all items are colour fast. While one item in a brand might be some others aren't. You need to prewash all absorbent parts of your nappy system. The absorbent parts include, nappies, boosters, fleece liners and muslins. You do not need to prewash the wraps. |
Hello,
I bought a set of nappies from you last month.
Now I am prewashing them and I wonder if I can mix the bamboo nappy and light accesories as boosters and muslims with the onesize pocket nappy (bright colors: yellow, jade and spice).
thanks!
Alondra
Normally they are colour fast but to be on the safe side keep the bright colours separate until you're confident they aren't bleeding colour. Could put a muslin in with them to check.
Hello,
i just ordered some Little Lamb Onesize (OSFA) V2 Pocket Nappies and some fleece liners and I just want to ask in advance on how should i prep them. Can I just was them all together (shell, inserts and liners)? or i have to wash them separately? thanks
yes you can prewash them altogether.
Should I prewash Muslims several times or is once enough?
Yes always prewash any absorbent part 2-3 times before you get started.
Hello, I have some new nappies ready for their first prewash. Is it ok to use a colour catcher sheet with them? I don't have many nappies to wash so would rather not separate them. Thanks
Can you wash new with your “used” wash after the prewash cycle
Yes you can do. Lots of people like to do the prewashes separately though as new nappies don't need much detergent as the wash is more about getting water through the fibres to make them more absorbent.
When doing a prewash, does it need to be the long 60degree cotton wash or will 2 x 40degree quick washes do the job?
Hi Maria,
2 quick washes will be fine.
Hi there,
I have bought at the moment just a tots bots peanut wrap, a bamboozle and an all in one nappy, just to see how I get on. Do I need to pre wash the wrap?
Thank you in advance
Everything will need one wash to remove any manufacturing reside but the bamboozle will need at least two prewashes before use. I will reach full absorbency after about 10 washes.
I only have one new nappy and one new booster to wash so it seems ridiculous to wash them separately. Is it a problem if I bung them in with my usual nappy wash?
Washing with your normal nappy wash is fine.
Hi I’m washing some new bumgenius freetime so they are all in one.
You say to separate light and dark but obviously the boosters (light) are attached to the wrap (dark) will the colour run?
Also can I prewash with a normal load?
Thanks!
Most nappies don't suffer from colour run, but if you are worried you could use a colour catcher.
Hi, just wondering if you put much/any detergent with the prewashed?
Thank you
Yes you do need detergent but just a small amount is fine
Can you soak all absorbent parts followed by one wash rather than multiple pre-washes? And do fleece liners need multiple pre-washes or is one with the covers fine for them?
This can be done for boosters but isn't recommended for nappies as soaking can damage the elastics
After pre-washing my little lamb cotton nappies they have gone all crispy...is this normal?
If you rub together they should become soft again
Do I use detergent for both pre washed or do I just use it for the first wash?
I would use detergent in all prewashes as it helps to break down any natural oils in the fabric.
Can i pre-wash my bamboozle nappies with my baby clothes at 30 degrees as long as I use powder non-bio detergent?
Yes that's fine but remember not to use any fabric conditioner
