Bamboo / Cotton Blend Terry Squares Overview

Bamboo terry squares are more absorbent than cotton therefore providing more absorbency for less bulk. Bamboo is a more fragile fabric than cotton so these have a blend of 50% cotton/50%bamboo so you gain absorbency and strength from the cotton.

Bamboo is incredibly environmentally friendly and sustainable as it grows so quickly, thrives without the use of pesticides and requires less water than cotton during the growth process. It is also naturally antibacterial making it particularly suitable for babies with sensitive skin.

We have only found one downside to bamboo nappies and that is that they are relatively slow drying, particularly compared to their cotton equivalents.  However, the bamboo cotton terry squares dry very quickly compared to the shaped bamboo nappies, so if you have fallen in love with the idea of bamboo but have very limited drying facilities then this is your answer.

Are terry nappies hard to use?

Many people initially get nervous when I talk about Terry Squares or recommend them.  There really is no need as they are incredibly simple to use, my children as toddlers used to help me fold terry nappies for their younger siblings or for demos. If a 3 year old can fold and fasten a Terry Square so can you!

Read our simple guide on how to use terry nappies.

Sizing

  • 50cm - Bamboo squares for people who have a very tiny newborn baby.
  • 60cm -This is the main size that most people will use. It fits birth to potty for the vast majority of children 7-35lbs.
  • 70cm - Large toddler to adult size. For Adults it should be pad folded.

How do I use it?

A Terry nappy is incredibly versatile. Using simple folds you can make the nappy fit exactly as your babies shape requires.  Don't worry no scary nappy pins to use as the modern Nappi Nippa safely, quickly and securely holds the nappy in place.

Visit our terry square folding advice guides for diagrams on the different folds available. Don’t think it’s the kite fold or nothing. We think the Jo Fold is excellent.

The Motherease Air Flow wrap is the best choice over terries, but if you are planning to pad fold your terries either occasionally or full time, you will need a gussetted velcro wrap like the Catcher wrap or the Bambinex wrap.

Care Instructions

Care should be taken not to dry them directly on top of a hot radiator, or to tumble dry them on a high setting as this may cause shrinkage, or flattening of the pile making the nappies difficult to fasten

MuslinZ Warranty

  • Workmanship /sewing defects for 30 days
  • Prefolds and terry inserts sewing defects only for 30 days.

WARRANTIES ARE NON- TRANSFERABLE. The name on the invoice/sales receipt must match the name of the individual making the claim. MuslinZ warranty does not cover any used items purchased second-hand.

Delamination: MuslinZ replace all diapers with delaminated PUL that are claimed with a year of purchase, with proof of purchase.

Cracked PUL: As per MuslinZ conversations with the PUL supplier, cracked PUL occurs when the laminate is severely dried out. This can happen because of water quality, types of detergent, and many other factors out of our control. As such, the manufacturer does not cover cracked PUL under warranty.

Stretched Braided Elastics: MuslinZ cover issues with braided elastics for 60 days, with proof of purchase. Elastics stretch over time and this is inevitable. Factors such as hard water, constant stripping, use of fabric softeners, bleach, vinegar or scented detergents, extreme high temperatures, smaller than recommended stashes, as examples, can affect the life of an elastic and are out of our control. If there is an issue with elastics within 60 days of purchase MuslinZ will require photos, proof of purchase and details of the issue at hand.

Inserts: MuslinZ cover all manufacturing defects on both viscose from bamboo and microterry inserts for 30 days with proof of purchase. This includes pre-existing rips to the fabric or sewing-related issues.

Normal Wear and Tear/Non-manufacturing related damages: All products have a limited lifespan despite care taken to preserve them. These products are used to contain such acidic substances as urine and feces, and are washed regularly. As such, they will all eventually show wear and tear. There is no set amount of time that a nappy product can be expected to last. MuslinZ do not warranty against degredation from prolonged storage or wear from use including but not limited to holes, runs under snaps, snags on sidewalks or from pools, wood, cement, or washer/dryer problems. If you notice any such thing PRIOR to first wash, please do not wash. Contact The Nappy Lady to arrange an exchange.

Love them!

We've used cloth for all of our children but with baby number 3 (now 6 months old) I thought that instead of replacing our leaky pocket nappies I'd try terry squares instead. Absolutely love these bamboo/cotton ones as they provide an excellent level of absorption compared to microfibre and learning to fold the nappies was dead easy (I'm just following the tutorials on this website). I think this pack provides brilliant value for money and I can see these lasting till my baby is potty trained (and for any other babies we're blessed with in the future!).

[I bought the 60cm squares]

Large Bamboo Terries
Rating:
04 June 2021  |

I was struggling with urine burns at night with my large 2 year old. He was potty trained in the day time so I didn't want to spend a fortune on nappies we might not need for much longer. I'd tried a few nappies recommend for night time and they just weren't big enough due to my childs height and were still leaking and completely soaked through dispite boosting. So I brought these, for the price for 2 shaped nappies I have 6 towels, and they have solved our night time problems! I use them with wool wraps, which themselves are worth their weight in gold, and contribute to the reasons for this great review!

Generally happy with these for our newborn. A couple have frayed at the edges after only a few washes.

50% bamboo

These are 50% bamboo and 50% cotton which I didn’t realise when I bought them. I guess this explains why they are so similar to the cotton terry squares!

"Gaynor's fold for girls" is a game-changer!
Rating:
25 September 2020  |

I bought Terries as an economical way to get my nappy numbers up and they really pull their weight. With the Motherease Airflow wraps they have great containment and are a brilliant night-time system. I used the Bat fold for the first few months. I then went off these nappies as I started to find it difficult to get that fold round my very tall (and 75th-centile-for-weight) little girl around 8 months. "Gaynor's fold for girls" changed that - it's brilliant! It puts all the bulk of the nappy where it's needed and is so neat round the buttocks and waist - it's even given my medium Motherease wraps a new lease of life, and is reasonably easy to fit day time clothes over! I've no idea why it wouldn't do as well for boys. Anyway, I'm using Terries just as happily night and day now. I only tend not to put them in the nappy bag for going out as, while it's fun to wrestle a 10mo into a folded nappy on my bedroom floor, I don't fancy it on a fold-down changing table. They do tend to distort away from being perfect squares as they get washed, but you just have to suppress your inner obsessive - they still fold fine and look the same under the wraps!

Great but not much difference to cotton terry
Rating:
24 May 2018  |

I got one of these to compare with the white bots all cotton terries thinking it might be a slimmer fit. It is not, it's slightly bulkier if anything, but it is also a bit more absorbent, so I've been tending to use it for overnight under a wool wrap and so far so good! I have only stuck to one though as these are twice the price of the cotton ones and not really worth it imo

Bulky and loses softness

These terries do the job, but they are rather bulky for bamboo and don't retain their softness at all which is a shame. They feel similar to my cotton terries now.

Too bulky and not exact squares
Rating:
11 August 2017  |

I was unable to use as folded nappy as just too bulky once folded. They are also not perfect squares so makes folding neatly tricky. Much softer after washes if tumble dried. Ended up using as towels which is an expensive use for them.

Excellent night time nappy

We use these on a night with a motherease flow wrap and nappi nippa, I think they are too bulky for day time but have excellent absorbency and are lovely quality, they dry quite quickly on radiator and are quite stain resistant especially once soaked in Napisan.

Very absorbent

15 July 2016  |

Great squares, they are more absorbent and softer than my usual terry squares. The only slight downside is that they take a little longer than cotton to dry and i can't just bung them in the tumbler with my usual Terries for a quick dry. I would recommend these for night nappies with a good wrap.

They seem very bulky and thick when compared to other bamboo Terry square not really a problem . Excellent for absorbing hold up over night no problems when using the right fold .a little slow to dry but not as bad as most other nappies . All in all very cheap good bed time nappy

Really absorbent

09 September 2015  |

I love these terries slimmer than my cotton ones yet they absorb more they Keep their shape after being washed, you have to be very careful if using a nappy nipper not to pull the little loops but this isn't a big issue I use the angle wing? Fold and I use a blueberry coverall in the day which makes a very trim nappy and mother ease airflow cover at night because my toddler is a heavy wetter I use 2 terries folded in the kite fold, folded as one together and this lasta 12 hours easy.

Disappointing
Rating:
07 July 2015  |

I'm really disappointed with these. They are really stiff and bulky on my little one no matter how I fold them. They are not soft at all. They do dry quickly and are handy to have around but are unusable for us as nappies. I will try again when she is bigger but at the moment we are stuck with disposables as my 50cm terries are too small for her.

stiff
Rating:
30 June 2015  |

I found the same as the first reviewer. These go really stiff very quickly in my hard water area and I don't have a tumble drier. After a while my cottons went really stiff as well. I used to use flats all the time, but now I always use my little lambs.

Very nice quality. Too big when folded for a comfortable fit on my 3 month old but think they will be great in a few months time.

When I used them at night they were considerably dryer than my other Terry squares in the morning. So great absorbency.

I had the same issue with them getting a bit crispy after washing but this seems to have settled down again.

Generally pleased...
Rating:
14 May 2015  |

I bought the terry squares after being talked into it by my mother - for flexibility of sizing/use over a shaped reusable after having used and liked using the cotton Muslinz for our newborn. Generally I am pretty pleased. Beautifully soft on opening, the only minor detraction at this point was that one of the nappies overlocked edge had not been properly finished and was fraying. I have experimented with folds, using both newborn and Gaynor's. I am currently using them with the Motherease airwrap, which doesn't leak when I attach the nappies, but occasionally does when my partner does - he reckons this is down to his lack of expertise in folding and putting them on our baby. However, usually I can get up to 12hrs overnight using these and a booster without leaks. Baby is now nearly 6months, and I'm hoping that as she grows, the terry squares will continue to be flexible in their fit and so continue to be a good investment.

Can't believe they're bamboo
Rating:
17 October 2014  |

I bought these after the Nature Babies ones assuming they'd be the same. They are not!
They are probably okay if you have a tumble dryer but I don't so they became really rough and stiff after being line dried.
Bamboo is supposed to be soft but these are like putting sandpaper on your baby!

Response:

We discontinued the nature babies ones due to continued feedback that they shrunk too much. These are a denser bamboo fabric, it's more heavy weight and is woven in a way to prevent shrinkage and hold onto more fibres long term.
