How many reusable nappies do you need?

It's a common question we get asked, how many nappies do I need? If you're keen to use a day and night, then you'll need about 15-20 nappies – plus boosters for night time and nappy liners for easy poo removal from a cloth nappy.

If you just want to use reusable nappies part time, 8-10 will do the job. This will make sure you're not washing nappies every day.

For a reusable swim nappy you usually only need one. If you are going on holiday then having a spare swim nappy so a total of two swim nappies can be reassuring.

Why buy reusable nappies?

To save a mountain of rubbish from landfill that takes over 500 years to break down.

Most children are in nappies for around 3 years, over that time they will have used over 5500 nappies. Even if you just replace one disposable a day with a reusable nappy one, you'd save over 1000 nappies from going to landfill.

Reusable nappies are free from harmful chemicals, many are available in fabrics such as organic cotton, bamboo or super absorbent hemp. All reusable nappies are gentle on babies skin, putting you in charge of what goes next to their most delicate area. A fleece liner will help keep baby feeling dry.

How do reusable nappies work?

Reusable nappies absorb urine and contain poo.

Some nappies are made up of one layer just like disposables and are called all in one nappies or pocket nappies. Other options are a two part system with separate nappy and waterproof wrap. The two part system is the most absorbent and bomb proof against poonami's! It also means that the system is flexible and more adaptable to suit different sized babies by using different inserts.

You can use a liner inside the nappy to make getting rid of poo easier from dirty nappies.

How often should you change reusable nappies?

The Nappy Lady recommends changing reusable nappies every two-and-a-half to three hours during the day and before or after every night feed for babies under six months. This changes to every three hours during the day and as needed during the night from six months onwards.

Baby Wipes

If you are using modern nappies you may want to consider using reusable wipes as not only will these save you a considerably amount of money but they are also far more effective at baby clean ups at nappy changes or wash with the nappies so no additional work for you.

Reusables or Disposables?

Parents are often undecided to use disposable nappies or reusable nappies, while we sell both on this site and offer an eco-disposable nappy option,  disposable nappies are a tiny miniority of what we stock and sell.

A modern cloth nappy is breathable, gentle on baby's sensitive skin and planet friendly. A common concern is that reusable washable nappies cause nappy rash but this is a myth, cloth nappies do not cause any more rashing than disposables. Choose between a disposable nappy liner and a reusable one to keep little one's skin protected from the wet nappy.

Are Reusable Nappies Better For the Environment?

The most recent study on environmental impact of reusable and disposable nappies was carried out by Defra in 2023 and the Life Cycle Analysis proved that reusable nappies (or reusable cloth diapers to our overseas friends) are indeed better! Change to an environmentally friendly nappy today!

What about the washing process?

Washing reusable nappies is simple. First you put the nappies through a rinse cycle to flush them through. Then wash on a long cotton wash no hotter than 60deg with washing powder. Dry your nappies and start the process all over again. No need to soak or use harsh chemicals.

Many nappies are designed to be washed and reused multiple times from birth to toilet training and often used on multiple children.

Care instructions will be emailed to you when you purchase from TNL.
